WA MP Elected as Second Deputy Speaker

Members of the House of Representatives have elected Member for Moore, Ian Goodenough as the Second Deputy Speaker in a Ballot.

Mr Goodenough was selected as the Coalition’s nominee for Deputy Speaker on Monday by the Liberal-National Party Room.

As a member of the Speaker’s Panel in the House of Representatives for the last eight years, Mr Goodenough has been responsible for chairing Parliament meetings, ensuring they are conducted in an orderly manner and according to the provisions of the standing orders of the House.

Mr Goodenough said “It is an honour to be elected by my colleagues on the floor of Parliament.”

“As a migrant to Australia, I am humbled by the great opportunity the role offers.”

“I will strive to be impartial and bring a degree of calmness to parliamentary proceedings.”

“Debate in Parliament should be robust, yet respectful, not necessarily loud or boisterous” Mr Goodenough said.

“Our deliberations can be intellectually rigorous and thorough yet courteous and respectful at the same time.”

“The public expects us to be respectful and dignified as their representatives.”

Colleagues of Mr Goodenough raised their support in Parliament, highlighting his experience and role on the House of Representatives Standing Committee of Procedure.
