Morrison Government Funds Majority of Joondalup Health Campus Expansion

The Federal Member for Moore has welcomed the appointment of a contractor to deliver the expansion of Joondalup Health Campus, four years after it was originally promised by WA Labor.

Ian Goodenough MP, said the Western Australian Government’s appointment of Multiplex Constructions Pty Ltd will progress Stage 2 of the development which the Federal Government has already contributed over 60% of the total project cost.

“The Australian Government committed $158 million towards the Joondalup Health Precinct through the Western Australian Hospital Infrastructure Package in 2018, with the total project now worth $256.7 million,” Mr Goodenough said.

In 2017 WA Labor promised $167 million to expand the Health Campus, however they have now cut their funding commitment to $98.7 million.  In contrast, the Australian Government’s commitment of $158 million has been met.

“The newly contracted Multiplex Constructions Pty Ltd will work with Ramsay Health Care to  further develop the design of the works which includes documenting the timing and sequencing, construction methodology, staging and agreed costing.

“The early works for the Emergency Department administration were completed last year amid the pandemic and are already operational. The immediate work due to commence will deliver a 12-bay Influenza-Like-Illness Unit in the Emergency Department (ED) to increase the hospital’s capability to safely manage patients with infectious diseases, like COVID-19.”

The full expansion project is set to be completed by late 2025 and includes:

·         A new mental health building, including 30 new acute mental health inpatient beds

·         12 new emergency department patient bays

·         A Behaviour Assessment Urgent Care Clinic

·         90 inpatient beds in a design to meet future demand

·         Six new critical care beds

·         Increased parking bays for members of the public and staff and

·         A new operating theatre and cardiac catheter laboratory.

Mr Goodenough MP, said hundreds of jobs will be created over the lifetime of this project, during the construction phase and beyond.
